In Germany, people eat an average of around ten kilos of chocolate per capita – every  year. The former luxury product has long since become one of the most popular mass consumption items, often costing little. But the cheap indulgence comes at the expense of other people and the environment.

On the following pages you will learn about how much work it is for cocoa farmers to cultivate cocoa beans, why they still cannot live of their work. You will also find out about why child labour still persists on cocoa plantations.

Environmental problems are also on the rise in cocoa growing areas. Deforestation, improper use of pesticides and climate change pose challenges to the cocoa sector.
